1927 : Kehidupan Para Elit Kolonial dan Buruh Jawa –Tionghoa
ATTENTION TO VIEWERS: Welcome to an archival documentary about Deli, East Sumatra, in 1927, one of the most famous plantation centers in the Dutch East Indies. Using original footage from the Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam, Failure Channel recreates the colonial world built on the golden commodity of the time: Deli tobacco. Behind the image of plantation “progress,” we see an unequal social structure, workers of various ethnicities imported to Sumatra, and the lives of European directors living in a completely different world. DELI 1927: THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY IN THE COLONIAL SHADOW This film, commissioned by Bureau voor Tabak, is directed by Willy Mullens of Haghe Film (The Hague). The footage shows how Deli tobacco is produced from start to finish, a massive industrial process that was a source of pride for the Dutch at the time. But behind the seemingly “orderly and productive” images, lies the story of contract workers of various ethnicities transported to Sumatra by the tobacco industry. The Deli Plantation is the clearest illustration of how the colonial economy worked: thriving on the hard work of workers who rarely received the spotlight. What's Presented in the Deli Archives: ° Tobacco plantations and the process from planting to harvest ° Workers from various ethnic groups brought to Sumatra ° Warehouses for processing, drying, and preparing export tobacco ° The lives of Western directors and staff: mansions, social clubs, and the colonial lifestyle ° The hierarchical plantation social structure: Europeans–foremen–workers ARCHIVAL INFORMATION Archive Title: Tobacco Harvest in Deli (1927) Director: Willy Mullens Country of Production: Netherlands Year of Production: 1927 Production Company: Haghe Film (The Hague) Archive Code: FLM65109 Footage Source: Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam Restoration & Narration: Failure Channel 🎞️ HISTORICAL NOTE The Deli plantations were one of the main economic drivers of the Dutch East Indies. In colonial films like this, we often see idyllic images: greenery, seemingly orderly work systems, and the prosperous lives of the European elite. However, colonial cameras rarely show the other side: the forced labor, labor contracts, and class inequality that filled the lives of workers. Through this documentary, Failure Channel invites viewers to re-examine Deli's history not only as a source of industrial pride, but also as a space where thousands of workers endured a difficult life for the success of the colonial economy. DISCLAIMER All footage comes from the Eye Filmmuseum's public domain collection and is presented in its original form. Some portions may contain colonial terms or perspectives that are now considered problematic.
