In 1971, a documentary team from the National Film Board of Canada, led by Canadian filmmaker Michael Rubbo, embarked on a long journey from Jakarta to the interior of Garut, West Java. Their goal was not simply to capture the modern city, but to discover a more tranquil and authentic Indonesian life in the villages. The journey began in Jakarta, which was undergoing renovations under the leadership of Ali Sadikin. Instead of using a train pulled by the legendary CC50 steam locomotive, the group chose to traverse the mountain roads in an old oplet (minibus) that had to be pushed up steep inclines. After a long journey through muddy roads and the Priangan mountains, they finally arrived in Cangkuang Village before dawn, as the call to prayer echoed through the morning mist. In this small, tranquil village, the documentary team discovered a community still deeply connected to nature: rice paddies, bamboo rafts at Situ Cangkuang, the tradition of mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and the friendliness of the villagers. The film also captures rare moments from 1971: a family planning campaign with Sundanese-language posters, traditional arts performances, and a mobile cinema showcasing the lives of the Inuit people from the Arctic region to villagers. Through this journey, Michael Rubbo's camera captures a portrait of Indonesia rarely seen by the outside world—a small village living in simplicity, yet rich in culture, tradition, and human warmth.
