Kehidupan Desa Jawa 1920-an | Sehari di Pedesaan Hindia Belanda
What was everyday life like in a Javanese village nearly a century ago? This rare archival film by Willy Mullens takes us through a typical day in rural Java during the early 20th century, from sunrise to sunset. Carefully restored and presented in chronological order, the film offers a glimpse into the daily rhythm of village life, shaped by farming, tradition, and the changing seasons. The footage shows duck herders leading their flocks to forage, children playing around their homes, farmers heading to the rice fields, and water buffaloes plowing the land. It also documents the complete rice-growing cycle—from preparing the fields, planting and harvesting rice, to pounding the grain into rice and finally preparing meals in the family kitchen. Elsewhere in the village, the film captures scenes of everyday community life, including roadside barbers, traveling vendors, drink sellers, children enjoying traditional cotton candy, the custom of chewing betel nut, and the many uses of the coconut tree in daily household life. As evening approaches, farmers return from the fields while the buffaloes are washed after a long day of work. Together, these scenes portray the timeless cycle of rural life in Java during the Dutch East Indies period. This archival film has been digitally restored through dust and scratch removal, image stabilization, AI-assisted colorization, 4K upscaling, and modern image enhancement techniques. The narration is based on historical context to help viewers better understand everyday life in Indonesia nearly a century ago.
