Etavunara Nilakada / Kalyani / Adi / Thyagaraja / Thirumala Brothers
Krithi: Etavunara Ragam: Kalyani Thalam: Adi Composer: Thyagaraja Vocal: Thirumala Brothers The Thirumalai Brothers were a respected Carnatic vocal duo consisting of P. B. Srirangachari and Embar Kasturi. Although not biological brothers, they became widely recognized as a performing pair distinguished by their strong stage presence, powerful resonant voices, and excellent Telugu diction. Their concerts were noted for their adherence to classical Carnatic traditions, featuring varnams, expansive raga alapana, niraval, swaraprasthara, and a repertoire that emphasized the compositions of Thyagaraja, while also incorporating innovative elements within a traditional framework. They performed at prominent venues, including during the annual Margazhi music season in Chennai, and are remembered as important exponents of the Carnatic vocal-duo tradition. Detailed biographical information about their early lives, training, and gurus is not widely available in public sources, which tend to focus primarily on concert reviews. Embar Kasturi’s musical legacy continues through his sons, Embar K. Krishnan and Embar K. Vijayaraghavan, who perform together as the Embar Brothers and carry forward the family’s Carnatic music tradition. Violin: Anayampatti Venkatasubramanian Mridangam: Tirupathi Krishnamachari Ganjira: Nerkunam Sankar This krithi is a devotional meditation by Thyagaraja on the omnipresence and ineffable nature of the Lord, addressed as Siva and Govinda. Its central message is that the divine cannot be fully grasped by thought or intellect; true experience comes only through sincere bhakti and complete surrender, making this composition both a philosophical reflection and a heartfelt prayer. Pallavi E thavunara nilakada niku enchi juda nagapadavu (E) Anupallavi Sitha gauri vagIeshvari yanu shri rupamulanda govinda (E) Charanam Bhu kamalarka nila nabhamulanda loka kothulanda shrikarudagu tyagaraja kararchitha shiva madhava brahmadulayanda (E) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Meaning: O blue-throated Lord, in which sacred place do you reside? You cannot be grasped or comprehended by the mind. O Lord Govinda, are you residing in the embodiments of Mahalakshmi , Sitha, Gowri, and Saraswathi, the Goddess of Speech? O Lord, are You located in the five great elements ( Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space ) or in the countless worlds? O Lord, bestower of prosperity, worshipped by the very hands of Thyagaraja Or are you present in the forms of Siva, Vishnu (Madhava), and Brahma? In which place are you located? you are not to be apprehended in thought. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER : These songs have been uploaded for hearing pleasure only and as an archive for Carnatic music.
