They Released 16 Bison Into a Dead Prairie — 20 Years Later, Washington Wants Them Gone
In October 2005, 16 bison stepped off a trailer onto a stretch of Montana prairie that hadn't felt the weight of a wild bison in over 120 years. The people who released them hoped, at best, that the animals would survive the winter. What those 16 bison — and their descendants — did to that land over the next two decades went further than anyone dared predict. Within months, the herd was already grazing in patterns cattle never replicate, carving wallows that filled with rainwater and became breeding grounds for frogs and insects that hadn't existed there in living memory. Over 20 years, peer-reviewed science confirmed what the land was showing: bison roam 10x farther from water than cattle, letting riverbanks recover for the first time in generations. Grassland stores carbon deeper and more durably than forests. And 16 animals had quietly grown into a herd of over 900, across more than 600,000 acres of restored Northern Great Plains. Then, in January 2026, the federal government revoked their grazing permits. The herd that healed the land has until September 30th to be removed from it.
