Dr. Başak Bostancı, an ophthalmologist and associate professor, warned against eye stones that appear inside the lower and upper eyelids. "While eye stones are generally harmless, they can puncture the conjunctiva over time. They can migrate to the surface of the eye and puncture the patient's eye, causing symptoms such as a foreign body sensation, redness, burning, and stinging. It's crucial to emphasize that patients should see an experienced ophthalmologist and never remove eye stones on their own," she said. Dr. Başak Bostancı, an ophthalmologist at Dünyagöz Suadiye Hospital, noted that treatment approaches for eye stones that appear inside the eyelids can vary, and provided information on the subject. Dr. Bostancı also noted that these stones are usually discovered during routine eye exams. "It's important to remember that in addition to eye-related conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma, which we strive to raise awareness about, less common conditions like chronic dry eye, allergies, and congestion are also detected during eye exams." "BE CAREFUL IF EYE STONES PERFORATED THE CONJUNCTIVAL AND PROJECTED TO THE SURFACE OF THE EYE" Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bostancı said, “Eye stones, also known by their Latin name, are small white or yellow concretions, which can be found in one or more small stones on the inside of the eyelid lining, either in the upper or lower lids. While we often call these stones, we can't actually say they are actually stones. Eye stones are small white deposits formed when the protein materials within the epithelial cells covering our body surfaces and the tear-producing glands become coated with calcium over time. These are not harmful, but if these small deposits penetrate the conjunctiva and reach the surface of the eye, they can sting the patient's eye, causing a foreign body sensation, redness, burning, stinging, and discomfort. When we see small white crystals inside our patients' eyelids, we can remove them with a very small needle. We then provide relief to the patient with treatments.” "THEY CAN FORM FOR NO REASON" Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bostancı explained that eye stones are generally seen in middle-aged and older patients, saying, "Eye stones can appear for no apparent reason, and these deposits can also build up over the years in patients with chronic dryness or allergies. Patients may discover they have these deposits during a routine eye examination without experiencing any symptoms. In some cases, when patients come to us complaining of a stinging sensation caused by sand or a foreign object in their eyes, we point these formations out to them and initiate treatment." "IF IT HAS DAMAGED THE CLEAR LAYER, IT MUST BE REMOVED BY AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST" Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bostancı continued: “Sometimes, eye stones are covered by a very thick layer of conjunctiva. In some patients, even if they have a large number of eye stones, if they are not causing severe symptoms, we treat them with artificial tears and gels. However, if eye stones have become visible on the surface and are causing problems by cutting through the conjunctiva, damaging the clear outer layer of the eye, they absolutely must be removed by an ophthalmologist. I must emphasize that patients should never attempt to remove eye stones themselves at home. They must be removed by an experienced ophthalmologist under a microscope, under local anesthesia, and appropriate antibiotic treatment should be administered. If eye stones occur due to chronic allergies or dryness, the underlying cause, the allergy and dryness, must also be treated.” “EYE STONES CAN RETURN OVER TIME” Emphasizing that eye stones can recur over time, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bostancı concluded by saying, "Our patients can receive regular eye checkups to learn if the stones are reoccurring. At this point, we must emphasize the importance of regular eye exams; it's important to remember that in addition to eye-related conditions we're trying to raise awareness about, such as macular degeneration or glaucoma, common conditions like chronic dryness, allergies, and congestion can also be detected during eye exams. Routine eye exams can help you see more comfortably."
