Retinal vessels, like those in the heart, can become blocked. Retinal vascular diseases usually present with sudden, painless vision loss. The retina is the retina-like layer that covers the inner surface of the eyeball. It consists of photosensitive cells that convert light entering the eye into electrical signals to form images, and nerve cells that transmit these signals to the brain. Because the retina is a highly active tissue, it requires significant amounts of oxygen and energy.
