K V Narayanaswamy - Live concert, early 1960s

I am delighted to be posting this wonderful concert of Sri K.V. Narayanaswamy from the early 1960s. Sri Narayanaswamy was accompanied by Sri Thirupparkadal S. Veeraraghavan on Violin and most likely by Sri Guruvayur Dorai on Mridangam. This is part of the few concert recordings of Sri Narayanaswamy from the early 1960s. I have tried my best to improve the clarity of this recording as well as remove any inconsistencies in this concert. Due to audio issues, I could not amplify this recording anymore without distorting it. The a few pieces before the Kharaharapriya are unfortunately missing. Huge thanks for my dear Balu Mama for this concert! The first Kapi of the two, is Suma Sayaka in Karnataka Kapi to be exact, composed by Swathi Thirunal. First off, there is this evocative feel to the Alaapana that is the case with all of KVN's renditions of Kapi(and Karnataka Kapi). Then, the nuance in the first line itself. The first line is repeated 7 times in the beginning. For a slower song such as Suma Sayaka which isn't like a song such as Varugalamo, which is so free flowing, I would say that this is a lot. However, every single repetition is different. Somewhere each time, there is a new elongation or new ornamentation, major or minor, subtle or noticeable. Out of all of the renditions I've heard, KVN's speed change at 56:09 is the only one that flows from the slow speed right into the fast speed. He always said that it is extremely important to learn a song with Talam because it's exactly what he did. His training under Sri Palghat Mani Iyer gave him complete control over the talam, adding on to his mastery over Ragam. This combination made things such as the 4 Ragam RTP possible.
