K V Narayanaswamy - Wedding Concert, c. 1983

I am delighted to be posting this impeccable quality K V Narayanaswamy(KVN) wedding concert from sometime around 1983. Sri Narayanaswamy was accompanied by Sri M. Chandrasekharan on Violin, and on Mridangam by Sri Trichur C. Narendran. Huge thanks to my Dear Balu Mama for this wonderful concert! Note - The Mridangam Vidwan has been wrongly stated as Sri Palghat Raghu in the video. Apart from the excellent quality, another thing that makes this concert stand out is Sri KVN's famous 4 Ragam Ragam Tanam Pallavi. The listener is always taken aback by the switching of the Ragams because its so subtle in a way. The change in scale is obvious but there are no errors, nothing is off pitch not even for a second. Listen from 1:09:00 to 1:09:11. I wouldn't be surprised if some don't even notice the switch between Thodi and Kalyani, two vastly different Ragams, until KVN sings, "Kallyaanee." Skip to 1:29:27 to 1:29:46 in the Yamuna Kalyani Alaapana. The tune may sound familiar as it is the same tune as the first two lines of Sri Vishu Padha, a song tuned by KVN on his guru, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar(you can listen to it here:    • KV Narayanaswamy - Live in the United Stat...   - skip to the Yamuna Kalyani part of the song). I'm not sure whether this was intentional or not, but I feel the beauty of it is that it shows how free flowing the music is. It is created in the moment and by whatever comes to mind. K V Narayanaswamy - Wedding Concert - c. 1983 Palghat Kollengode Viswanathan Narayanaswamy (15 November 1923 – 1 April 2002), often referred to as K. V. Narayanaswamy was an Indian musician, widely considered to be among the finest Carnatic music vocalists of the 20th century. He was awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1986. He was described as the "Perfect Knight" of Carnatic music, a phrase from Geoffrey Chaucer, by V. K. Narayana Menon, art critic of India and recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.
