These are definitely the most common associations, but there is a certain type of abuse that is still not talked about enough. This is precisely why so many people are unaware that for years they lived in a relationship based on control and domination. We're talking about economic abuse—a form of psychological abuse that can equally effectively destroy a spouse's self-esteem, independence, and emotional stability. And most importantly, from a family law perspective, it can be a single cause for divorce, solely due to the fault of the other party. In this video, I explain exactly what economic violence is, what behaviors can contribute to it, and why its effects are so destructive. Perhaps your husband or wife controls your every expense, forces you to ask for money for basic purchases, demands receipts, or completely cuts you off from information about your shared finances. Or perhaps, on the contrary, you bear all the costs of living, while your partner spends theirs exclusively on themselves? Regardless of the form, the goal is the same: to weaken your agency, psychologically depend on you, and place you in a position of inferiority to your partner. In the video, I also discuss what will be crucial for many viewers: whether economic violence is sufficient grounds for divorce, how courts view such cases, and what evidence you can present to prove your partner has been abusive towards you. Financial documents, witness statements, account history, and bank transfer confirmations—all of these can be significant if used as a tool of manipulation or control. If you're new here, my name is Iwo Klisz. I'm an attorney at Klisz & Partners, and for many years I've been representing clients in divorce cases, including the most difficult ones—those involving narcissists, abusers, and those who use toxic methods of domination. On my channel, I discuss not only the technical aspects of divorce but also the emotions, fears, manipulations, and patterns I see in my clients' real-life stories. I recently recorded videos about divorcing a narcissist, among other things, which can be a great complement to today's material—be sure to watch them later. Economic abuse, though often hidden and justified by the perpetrator, is one of the most serious forms of psychological abuse. It leads to a loss of self-confidence, social isolation, and, in extreme cases, complete dependence on a partner. Many people, for years, fail to realize that what they consider "care," "thrift," or "natural division of labor" is actually a tool of control. In the video, I share stories similar to those that come to my law firm: money being siphoned off, the right to work being taken away, documents being forced to be signed, budget manipulation, and investment decisions being dictated. I'll also remind you how important it is to understand that the obligation to "contribute to meeting the needs of the family" doesn't mean the exclusive financial responsibility of one party or the dominance of the partner who earns more. The law clearly states the principle of equal living standards. If your partner consciously and persistently violates this principle, the court may find them solely responsible for the breakdown of the marriage—which opens the door to alimony payments if the divorce worsens your living situation. If what I'm talking about sounds familiar, watch this video until the end. You'll understand how to recognize economic abuse, what steps you can take, how to secure evidence, and when to seek legal help. And if you'd like to delve deeper into the topic of divorce evidence, you'll find a separate video on my channel devoted entirely to this topic. I also encourage you to subscribe, as more videos on the psychological aspects of divorce and recovering from toxic relationships will be coming soon. If you need individual help or a consultation, you can find my law firm's contact details in the description. You don't have to go through this alone.
