Organic Chemistry II CHEM-2425 Ch 16 Reactions of Aromatic Compounds Part 2

Chapter 16 Lecture Video Part 2 Section 16.6 Substituted Benzenes: Distinguish between inductive and resonance effects. Draw the resonance structures for electron-donating groups (EDG) and electron-withdrawing groups (EWG). Determine the net inductive and resonance effect of a substituent. Learn which substituents are electron donating and which are electron withdrawing. Section 16.7 EAS of Substituted Benzenes: Predict the effect of substituents on the rate of EAS and on the orientation of substituents. Section 16.8 Why Substituents Activate or Deactivate a Benzene Ring: Explain why some substituents are activating while others are deactivating. Section 16.9 Orientation Effects in Substitution Benzenes: Use resonance structures to explain why some substituents are ortho-para directors and others are meta directors. Memorize the chart of activators vs. deactivators and ortho-para vs. meta directors. These are the lectures that I use in my Organic Chemistry II course. The textbook I use is Smith, Janice "Organic Chemistry", McGraw Hill, 6th Ed., 2020, ISBN13: 9781260119107. Some images used in this video come from that textbook.
