In the 1960s and 1970s, the Middle East was one of the main theaters of the Cold War, where the superpowers faced each other indirectly. Israel, supported by the United States, and the Arab countries, supported by the USSR, gave rise to a series of conflicts that redefine the borders and geopolitical balances of the region. Everything exploded in 1967 with the Six-Day War. Nasser's Egypt imposed the blockade of the Straits of Tiran, threatening Israel, which responded with a surprise attack. In a few days, Israel conquers East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, Gaza and the entire Sinai, inflicting heavy losses on the Arab armies. But the Israeli military victory generates serious consequences: over 400,000 Palestinians flee, tensions with the Arab states increase and the PLO, the Palestine Liberation Organization, gains strength. The PLO, nationalist and Marxist, led by Yasser Arafat, carries out attacks and guerrilla actions against Israel starting from its bases in Lebanon and Jordan. In 1970, after an attempted coup, Jordan attacks the Palestinian guerrillas in a conflict known as "Black September", forcing them to take refuge in Lebanon and Syria. The PLO does not stop and in 1972 carries out a sensational attack during the Munich Olympics, hitting Israeli athletes. In the meantime, after the death of Nasser, the new Egyptian president Anwar Sadat wants to take back the Sinai. In 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated attack on Israel during Yom Kippur, a Jewish holiday. The surprise effect was devastating, but the Israelis, with American help, managed to counterattack. The war ended without clear winners: Israel conquered another stretch of the Suez Canal, but for the first time it was seriously challenged. The peace negotiations, led by US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, began a process known as "baby-step diplomacy". Although tensions remained high, it was clear that in the new interconnected world, weapons were no longer enough.
