My Largest Observation Hive Installed, Populated, and Sounds Recorded

The best observation hive at The Way To Bee is now in service. Clearer view, more frames, better audio recording, and a shout out to Rickey and Ruth Roark of Horizontal Bees. This is my favorite configuration to date. Building your own? Start with your frame dimensions, and I highly recommend having every level in triple-frame configurations. Yes, I know that means you can't see four interior surfaces but it is the best for your bees. 3/8" is the key to less brace comb and easier management by your bees. Frame side-bars should be 3/8" from the interior sidewalls. Top and bottom bars should be 3/8" from each other above and below. The exception is the top feeder space, and the bottom area where the entrance is located. NOTE: They will likely build drone comb in the open top space and onto the bottom row of frames, and that's interesting to observe. The shoulders of your side-bars should also be 3/8" from the interior of the glass surface. They can draw their comb out, but it reduces the amount of brace comb that may add to that viewing window. INSULATION: It's important to insulate the front and back viewing windows so the bees can better manage their interior climate. This works for unheated spaces as well as climate-controlled interiors. SUPPORT: Plan for 150 lb load and you'll be fine. Firmly attach one side to a solid structure. As the colony progresses, the top will be mostly honey with the brood down below.
