Osman's proclamation officially separated him from the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, a superior entity that had dominated Anatolia for the previous two centuries. The principality of Osman was known as a Beylik, a kind of small autonomous emirate that, due to its geographical location, began a comfortable expansion across the peninsula. Due to its proximity to Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire clashed with the Byzantine Empire very early on, an empire that would enter a period of profound decline during the 14th century. In the summer of 1302, the warriors of Osman, by then known as Ottomans, defeated the Byzantines at the Battle of Bapheus. The victory at Bapheus, a plain on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, not only allowed the first Ottoman to legitimize his possessions but also to unify the neighboring Turkic tribes. Upon Osman's death in 1326, his son and heir, Orhan I, ushered in a period of territorial expansion that would not cease until the conquest of the Eastern Rome, Constantinople, in 1453. Today at Storiopolis, we delve into the origins of the Ottomans, a semi-nomadic Turkic tribe that, in its early stages, went from being prey to the Mongols to posing a serious threat to the Byzantine Empire itself.
