It separates two continents, Europe and Asia, and divides two seas: the Sea of Marmara to the south and the Black Sea to the north, the source that supplied trade to the polis throughout ancient times. We are talking about Byzantium, present-day Istanbul, the historical, cultural, and economic center of Turkey. It was renamed twice: first in 330 AD, when it was renamed Constantinople, in honor of its founder, Emperor Constantine. It survived for 1,123 years, until the Ottoman Turks took it over in 1453 and gave it a new name: Istanbul, which is the name it has retained to this day. But its true origin was neither Istanbul nor Constantinople; it was Byzantium, in honor of its founder, a Greek navigator from Megara named Byzas. The city was founded by Byzas in 657 BC, so before becoming the capital of an Empire, the Rome of the East, it lived for a long 987 years as simply Byzantium. Today in Storiopolis, we're going to learn about that history, its origins, and its journey through Antiquity. If we're going to delve into the Byzantine universe on this channel, what better way to start than with its own Greek roots.
