In the first part, we discussed the swords worn by Kamakura samurai at the time of the Mongol invasion. In this second part, we'll focus on the equipment worn by the Mongol soldiers: their helmets and bows and arrows. "This shouldn't have been a piece of cake." Under the ambitions of Emperor Kublai Khan, who had become the ruler of the Central Plains, the Yuan Dynasty steadily expanded its territory. It should have been incredibly easy to swallow the former hegemon, the Southern Song Dynasty, bring Goryeo under its control, and then conquer the small island nation to the east. But there must have been... The Mongol army, boasting the world's strongest and most advanced weaponry, faced an unexpectedly difficult battle against the fierce resistance of the Kamakura samurai defending the small island nation. A brave counterattack by Japan's fiercest men, plus an unexpected ambush of seasonal winds and rain, thwarted Kublai Khan's ambitions for the second time. The remains of that fierce battle still lie at the bottom of the waters off Kyushu, with the Korean Peninsula on the opposite shore and the continent beyond. Ships sunk after the fierce fighting... as well as the helmets and bows and arrows worn by the soldiers. These historical witnesses have been brought to light once again after so much time. Featured in this video are the Mongol army's leather helmets and bows and arrows donated by the famous Kono Michiari to Oyamazumi Shrine, as well as identical Mongol helmets, bowls, and bows and arrows! Why are they here...? Don't miss this romantic look into Japanese swords, which will take you through the miraculously preserved helmets and bows and arrows that have survived to this day, and into the great event of the Mongol invasion that sent shock waves through Japan 750 years ago.
