Where is the "Toeizan Shinobuokabe" engraved by Nagasone Toushiro?! Wakizashi Inscription: Made by Nagasone Kosato, Residing in Toeizan Shinobuokabe August 12, Enpo 4 The inscription on the wakizashi by Nagasone Kosato (Toushiro), which we were asked to appraise last time, is inscribed with the place name "Residing in Toeizan Shinobuokabe." Toushiro is believed to have left for Edo around the time of the Shoo-Meireki era (1603-1606) and continued to forge swords in Edo for the rest of his life. Kotetsu's footsteps have been documented in various books, and leading researchers have conducted detailed research on the area since the Meiji period. However, the exact location of the "Shinobuokabe" where Kotetsu lived has yet to be determined. Shinkai, president of Ginza Choshuya, a specialty Japanese sword store, will use his knowledge and discerning eye for swords cultivated over more than 40 years of experience as an appraiser, as well as his observations, to explore the true nature of this long-standing mystery. He will examine the various theories presented by renowned collectors and leading experts on Kotetsu, including Okubo Kazuo, known as "Okubo Kotetsu," Sugihara Shozo of "Research on Chosone Katsutetsu," Sato Kanzan, Fukunaga Suiken, and Ishii Masakuni of "Japanese Sword Meikan." He will also consider the changes that have occurred in the area of Ueno from the Edo period to the present day, and draw a conclusion based on his research. Not only is it a fascinating study of Kotetsu, known as the Yokozuna of Shinto, but it also explores the history of Ueno, a place that has been constantly destroyed and rebuilt by man-made and natural disasters such as fires, earthquakes, and wars over the 400-plus years since the beginning of the art of swordsmanship to the present day. Where is "Tōeizan Shinobugaoka-hen" inscribed by Nagasone Kotetsu?! Wakizashi inscription: Made by Nagasone Kōri (Kotetsu) Residing near Shinobugaoka of Tōeizan Auspicious day, August 4, year of Enpō (1676) In the previous episode, we discussed the place name "Residing near Shinobugaoka of Tōeizan" inscribed on a wakizashi by Nagasone Okisato(Kotetsu) that was submitted for appraisal. It is believed that Kotetsu moved to Edo around the Jōō to Meireki era and continued to make swords in Edo for the rest of his life. While Kotetsu's footsteps have been recorded in various documents and studied in detail by leading researchers since the Meiji era, there is still no definitive theory about the exact location of "Shinobugaoka-atari" where Kotetsu resided. Fukami, the representative of Ginza Chōshūya, a specialized Japanese sword shop, will examine this long-unsolved mystery of "Shinobugaoka-atari" using his expertise and observational skills cultivated through over 40 years of appraisal experience. We will review and verify the theories of renowned collectors and leading Kotetsu researchers one by one, including Ōkubo Ichiou known for "Ōkubo Kotetsu", Sugihara Shōzō of "Research on Nagasone Kotetsu", Satō Kanzan, Fukunaga Suiken, and Ishii Masakuni of "Japanese Sword Inscription Encyclopedia". Additionally, we will consider how the town of Ueno has changed from the Edo period to the present day, to draw a conclusion. This content is not only interesting as a study of Kotetsu, who is called the Yokozuna of the Shintō period, but also from the perspective of the history of Ueno, a land that has repeatedly been destroyed and rebuilt over more than 400 years due to human-made and natural disasters such as great fires, earthquakes, and wars.
