#29: Comment fonctionne le statut d'entrainement de Garmin?
The algorithms integrated into Garmin watches and computers provide an indicator of training performance and effectiveness. This data is displayed on the watch via a widget, available on the following models: fenix 5 / 5 Plus / 6 Series, Quatix 5 / 6 Series Forerunner 935 / 945 Descent Mk1 D2 Charlie / D2 Delta series Edge 530/830/1030 computers fenix Chronos / MARQ Collection tactix Charlie / Delta Forerunner 245/245 Music Forerunner 645/645 Music This data is also available on Garmin Connect and Garmin Connect Mobile, and you can view a report on your training status on these platforms. Training status can vary between the following states: No status: the watch and algorithms have not accumulated enough data Productive: this is the status we would like to have most of the time; training is balanced and showing results Maintaining: training no longer helps us progress, but it allows us to maintain our training level without it deteriorating Recovery: The training level is lower or less intense. The body recovers energy Non-productive: The training load or intensity is rather high, but no progress is observed Detraining: The training level is insufficient or not of sufficient quality, and a drop in level is observed Overtraining: The training load or intensity is too high, risking overtraining or injury Peak training: The load is lower than normal but the intensity is high, and the body is ready for a competition This training status algorithm is essentially based on two values: VO2Max, itself derived from a specific algorithm and calculated for running with heart rate measurement or cycling with heart rate and power measurement EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) The EPOC value corresponds to the time it takes the body to return to the level of oxygen consumption equivalent to resting after training or sports activity. Indeed, after a workout, the body takes some time to gradually return to its resting oxygen consumption level. The more demanding the workout (long and/or intense), the longer this duration. EPOC is a good indicator of training load. Thus, by measuring the load of each workout, as well as long-term monitoring of changes in VO2Max, the training status algorithm can provide an indication of the quantity and quality of training. But as you can see, these estimations involve a nesting of algorithms: VO2Max estimation by algorithm EPOC estimation by algorithm And above that, the estimation of training load and quality to provide a status Thus, to obtain the most reliable information possible, it is necessary to: Ideally, perform a running activity at least twice a week with a heart rate monitor that includes at least 10 minutes at more than 70% of HRmax to feed the algorithm with a VO2Max change Perform training sessions in other sport profiles to feed the algorithm with load data While almost all the sport profiles offered by Garmin watches provide EPOC data, only the running sport profiles with GPS and heart rate and cycling sport profiles with heart rate and power provide VO2Max data. In particular, indoor running (on a treadmill) or trail running profiles do not provide VO2Max values. The EPOC data, i.e., training load and quality, from these profiles are used to provide training status. However, without updated VO2Max values, the training status will no longer be updated after approximately 10 days. This is true even if you complete 10 trail, kayak, treadmill, and yoga workouts. Finally, Garmin recently offered the ability to pause training status. In reality, the algorithms will continue to accumulate data and update the values, but during the pause, the widget and app notifications will simply hide the training status, so you don't have to "suffer" the "detraining" status after each session. So as soon as you reactivate your training status, the values are visible again, without actually having stopped being calculated!!
