It lies on the shores of Lake Mergozzo, located just north of Lake Maggiore and separated from it by the River Toce. The town's historic centre is characterized by narrow, cobbled streets lined with traditional stone houses. The heart of Mergozzo is the central square, dominated by the Vecchio Olmo (Old Elm), a centuries-old tree with a hollow trunk that is recognized as a "monumental tree of Piedmont" and a symbol of the town. Lake Mergozzo is renowned for its exceptionally clear, clean waters and is one of the purest lakes in Italy, thanks to a ban on motorboats, a sophisticated sewage system, and the absence of industrial pollution.
