Pier 57 NYC Camera Test | Boats, Yachts, Waterfront Roads & Magic Lantern RAW on Canon 70D
In this video, I filmed a series of test shots around Pier 57 in New York City, using the Canon 70D with Magic Lantern HD RAW 14-bit video. This was mainly a camera and lens testing day rather than a full walking tour. I was trying different shots, focal lengths and filming styles around the pier, the surrounding roads, the shoreline buildings, and the interesting yachts and boats nearby. The video is a record of how the area looked at that moment, captured through different compositions and perspectives. Pier 57 is a great place for this kind of test because there is so much variety in one location. You have the Hudson River, boats and yachts, waterfront paths, traffic, modern buildings, people walking, reflections, distant skyline views, and the busy road running beside the pier. It gave me a mix of wide shots, tighter details, moving subjects and still architectural scenes to test the camera with. This video is not really about one single subject. It is more about observing the area and seeing how the Canon 70D RAW footage handles the textures, light, movement and atmosphere of the waterfront. The boats, buildings, road, sky and river all give the footage different things to deal with. The footage was edited in DaVinci Resolve, giving a chance to see how the Magic Lantern RAW files hold up in post-production. The Canon 70D may be an older DSLR, but with Magic Lantern RAW it can still produce a detailed and cinematic image, especially when filming real-world street and waterfront scenes. Filmed on: Canon 70D Format: Magic Lantern HD RAW 14-bit video Edited in: DaVinci Resolve Shot time: 3:45pm Location: Pier 57, Hudson River Park, New York City Address: Pier 57, 25 11th Avenue, New York, NY 10011 Google Maps link: https://www.google.com/maps/search/?a... Pier 57 & Area Description Pier 57 is a restored waterfront pier on Manhattan’s west side, located in Hudson River Park between Little Island and Chelsea Piers. It is now a public space with a rooftop park, indoor areas, food, events, seating, waterfront views and access to the riverfront. The area around Pier 57 is especially good for filming because it combines several different New York looks in one place. On one side, there is the road, traffic, buildings and city movement. On the other side, there is the Hudson River, boats, yachts, piers, open sky and views across the water. It feels both urban and coastal at the same time. Visitors in this area can see Pier 57 itself, Little Island nearby, Chelsea Piers further north, the Hudson River Park walkway, passing boats, yachts, river traffic, cyclists, joggers, tourists and wide views across the Hudson. The mix of water, architecture, people and movement makes it a strong location for camera testing. For this video, Pier 57 worked well as a visual test location because there were many different subjects to film: the road around the pier, shoreline buildings, boats, yachts, river views, reflections, people walking and changing light. It gave the Canon 70D and Magic Lantern RAW setup a good range of scenes to capture. Video Notes This was mainly a record of test footage rather than a polished travel video. I was experimenting with different focal lengths, angles and styles to see how the Canon 70D would handle the Pier 57 area in Magic Lantern RAW. The result is a simple visual snapshot of the waterfront that day, showing the roads, buildings, boats and atmosphere around Pier 57 through different lens choices and framing styles.
