Exploring a Real Haunted Mortuary | New Orleans

Most haunted houses are built to scare you. This one spent decades helping families say goodbye. During our visit, we were given an exclusive daytime tour inside The Mortuary Haunted House, giving us a rare opportunity to explore this incredible building without the Halloween crowds. As we walked through its historic hallways and grand staircases, we learned the fascinating history behind one of New Orleans' most unique landmarks. Standing at the end of Canal Street, surrounded by some of New Orleans' most historic cemeteries, this beautiful Victorian home was built in 1872 for Mary Slattery, just a few years after the Civil War. It eventually became a full-service funeral home that served generations of New Orleans families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Between 1930 and 2003, more than 20,000 funerals were held inside these walls. Families gathered here for visitations, funeral services, and final farewells before their loved ones were laid to rest in the nearby cemeteries. At the time, the funeral home was considered one of the most complete facilities in the city, offering private family suites, dining facilities, and on-site staff to care for grieving families. Beneath the mansion, the original preparation and embalming areas still remain, serving as a reminder of the building's remarkable past. Rather than being demolished after the funeral home closed in 2003, the historic building was carefully preserved and transformed into The Mortuary Haunted House. Today, it's widely considered one of the premier Halloween attractions in New Orleans. What makes it so unique isn't just the elaborate sets, talented actors, and immersive scares—it's the fact that you're walking through a real former funeral home with more than a century of history behind it.
