Storm Oscar - Ribeira Brava - Madeira - June 2023 Storm Oscar, which hit the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, caused torrential rainfall, breaking rain records. The maximum alert has been decreed on the whole island. Moreover, Portugal has set a new national record since the accumulation of water reached 604.3 mm over a period of 24 hours at Pico do Arieiro and 446 mm at Pico Alto, both located in Madeira. These torrential rains caused numerous landslides and floods. Several flights were also canceled due to strong winds. We were staying in the Ribeira Brava area during Storm Oscar. During the night, we heard a deafening noise coming from outside. It was the water from the river flowing into the canal. The next day, we walked around the area and saw that the river, which had only a thin trickle of water, had turned into a powerful brownish torrent. The heavy rains created many waterfalls that flowed down the vertiginous cliff faces. The ocean was raging and the waves were crashing against the huge concrete blocks that surround the seaside resort of Ribeira Brava.
