And standing proudly on the shores of Lake Shinji, a symbol of the "City of Water," is the Minamikan, a long-established inn founded in 1888 (Meiji 21), which continues to evolve even after more than 130 years. When discussing Minamikan, the presence of literary giants and cultural figures who made it their regular lodging is indispensable. Lafcadio Hearn, who loved Matsue, encountered Japanese aesthetics here. Tōson Shimazaki visited while writing his masterpiece, "Before the Dawn," and praised the inn's tranquility and the beauty of its garden. Furthermore, writers of the Shirakaba school, such as Naoya Shiga and Saneatsu Mushanokoji, are said to have deepened their friendships and gained creative inspiration at this inn. In the lounge immediately to the right upon entering the entrance, records of these literary giants are displayed. As you savor the complimentary coffee, tea, and sweets while viewing the exhibits in this solemn space, you cannot help but feel the weight of history. The renowned garden of white sand and green pines, visible from the dining area on the first floor, is a masterpiece that consistently ranks high in American rankings of Japanese gardens. The beauty of the borrowed scenery, where the dry landscape garden with its hundreds-of-year-old pine trees blends seamlessly with Lake Shinji in the background, is truly like a painting. Highlights of this garden include a pine tree over 300 years old, and three pine trees representing a parent and child: the central black pine as the husband, the red pine as the wife, and the lower pine on the left as the child. Next to them stands a haiku monument by Seishi Yamaguchi, inscribed with the poem, "Ducks remain, between Fujimura, Fujimura too." This time, I stayed in the "Kogetsu" room, one of the four observation rooms on the fourth floor. The fourth floor is the highest point in Minamikan. The moment you enter the room, your eyes are drawn to the enormous window covering an entire wall facing Lake Shinji, which unfolds like a movie screen, offering a panoramic view of the lake. The room's interior retains the essence of traditional Japanese sukiya architecture, with its warm wooden accents, while also featuring a Simmons bed and sophisticated furniture. It perfectly satisfies the desires of modern travelers who want to stay in a historic inn but don't want to compromise on comfort or convenience. I sat on the sofa, gazing at Lake Shinji, and enjoyed the Japanese sweets in the box on the table. The beer and juice in the refrigerator were complimentary. I was able to connect my smartphone to the Marantz amplifier via Bluetooth and listen to music in high-quality sound. The Sony television was also internet-streaming compatible, allowing me to enjoy movies on a large, impressive screen. And in the panoramic hot spring bath overlooking Lake Shinji, with its free-flowing natural spring water, the high vantage point of the fourth floor allowed us to fully enjoy the famous Matsue Shinji Lake Onsen without worrying about being seen from ou...
