An investigation reveals the tactics used by Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), Brazil's largest criminal faction, to expand its operations in the South and Central-West regions. With exclusive access to audio, video, and photos, authorities identified a highly professional structure, similar to that of large corporations. Originating in São Paulo prisons, the group now controls the entry, transport, and shipment of narcotics to continents such as Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, taking advantage of the more than 5,000 kilometers of land and water borders of the national territory. The group's new strategy focuses on the so-called "Southern Column," which encompasses the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul. Historically concentrated in the Southeast and North, the PCC has shifted its operational axis due to police crackdowns and disputes with rival factions. The search for new distribution routes has transformed the south-central region of the country into the main target of drug kingpins, reconfiguring the logistics of organized crime. The geography of the region is a key strategic factor for criminals. Mato Grosso do Sul, for example, borders Paraguay and Bolivia, serving as the main entry point for weapons and drugs, in addition to bordering five other states. Faced with intense police operations at the Port of Santos in São Paulo, the faction began diverting its cargo through the roads of Paraná towards the port of Paranaguá and the five port complexes of Santa Catarina, also using the highways of Rio Grande do Sul to connect to Argentina. Investigations indicate that Santa Catarina has become the headquarters of this new arm of the organization. In response, state security forces created a task force that, since 2021, has carried out five major operations. The most recent resulted in the arrest of 150 people in 53 municipalities. Of this total, 83 court orders were carried out inside prisons, where detained leaders continued to manage human resources, authorize financial transactions, and order assassinations with a business-like management style. Files obtained from seized cell phones expose the strict remote control exercised by the leadership. The bosses monitor everything from the quality of the drugs sold to the maintenance of the arsenal by local gunsmiths. The PCC also began recruiting criminals in the South to send them for practical training on the streets of São Paulo.
