A group of businessmen was the target of a money laundering investigation involving criminal factions in Brazil. According to the police, the scheme moved more than R$ 100 million, operating through the sale of cell phone cases. The case revealed a new behavior of the factions: the outsourcing of money laundering. The operation focused on a condominium in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, where Reda Zayoun and his brothers were arrested. The Lebanese businessmen owned stores in places like Rua 25 de Março in São Paulo. Despite their humble origins, they began to flaunt luxury in recent years. Bárbara Luzia Souza Carvalho was identified as a central figure in the operation. She allegedly moved R$ 47 million while declaring a low income. Her husband, Jean Felipe Cunha Costa, is also involved; he was already under investigation for laundering money for another criminal faction. The group used shell companies to provide services to criminal organizations. A printing company moved R$ 32 million in one month under the supervision of accountant Thierry Martins Lourenço Ribeiro. Investigations revealed the use of the "hawala" method, an Arabic system based on trust, ideal for circumventing financial controls. The businessmen operated in the strategic region of the tri-border area, known for smuggling to urban centers like São Paulo.
