Programa Sem Censura sobre a esquizofrenia, 19 abril de 2016

Dr. Leonardo Palmeira, a psychiatrist, discusses the importance of psychosocial treatments and the possibilities for each patient within a new paradigm: personal recovery. In this paradigm, the patient becomes more self-aware, develops self-criticism and resilience, and empowers themselves to plan their life and make the necessary decisions for recovery. He cites family psychoeducation through seminars and self-help groups, individual psychotherapy, and support for work and study as key therapies in this process. The psychiatrist also discusses his work at the Institute of Psychiatry at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and the community groups created from the Psychoeducation Program, which now offer a free support network in neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro in an autonomous and independent manner. This work was presented this month at the world congress on schizophrenia in Florence.
