It is the most underestimated illness in Germany. Depression is often recognized too late, destroying lives and families, and leading to death. One in four women and one in eight men in Germany suffer from it. Moreover, the illness is taboo and stigmatized. SWR author Heiko Wirtz-Walter confronts the suffering and his own past, spending seven days among people with depression at the psychiatric clinic in Klingenmünster. He discovers ways out and available support. Although the suicide rate among people with depression is 15 percent, every patient can still receive help.
