Female Traditional Supergroup 'Macalla', Ireland 1984
The all female traditional music group Macalla perform at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in Donegal. Twenty members of Macalla perform at Oireachtas na Gaeilge, which was held in Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht in October 1984. In total, Macalla comprises of twenty three of Ireland’s best-known women musicians and singers. Formed in 1984 their first performance was on International Women’s Day. Macalla is an ensemble featuring ten fiddles, three flutes, seven singers and one concertina, piano, harp and bodhrán (and many instrumentalists also sing) from ten of the thirty two counties on the island of Ireland. The members are: Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaoich (vocals); Mary MacNamara (concertina); Roma Casey (fiddle); Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (fiddle and vocals); Mary Corcoran (fiddle); Máire Ní Chaoimh (fiddle); Siobhán Ní Chaoimh (flute); Patsy Broderick (piano); Mary McElvaney (fiddle); Siobhán Breathnach (harp and vocals); Mary Clare Breathnach (vocals), Bríd McElvaney (fiddle), Clare Eustace (fiddle), Pearl O’Shaughnessy (fiddle); Mairéad Ní Ghallchóir (vocal & bodhrán); Joan McDermott (vocal); Nóra M. Ní Loinsigh (vocal); Róisín Gaffney (vocal); Ursula Kennedy (vocal); Maureen Fahy (fiddle); Clodagh McGrory (flute); Edel McWeeney (fiddle); Catherine McGorman (flute).
