Caliper repair is necessary if the brake disc and drum of the car are overheating. The calipers of ZAZ, Tavria, and Slavuta vehicles are identical. The caliper begins to overheat, the brake piston sticks, and the brakes begin to perform poorly. Caliper repair is also necessary if they don't move properly on their guides. This can cause the wheel to spin poorly, and fuel consumption increases. A caliper repair kit includes rubber seals and cuffs, and may also include a new piston. I have a ZAZ-1103 "Slavuta," but the repair procedure for most calipers is the same. A brake caliper can have two problems: a stuck brake piston; a stuck caliper guide pin. If the caliper piston is stuck in the extended position, you can try pushing it back into the cylinder with a tire iron or a large clamp before replacing the pads. Before doing this, inject WD-40 universal lubricant under the rubber piston seal with a syringe. If the piston does not fit into the caliper body, clean it and replace the repair kit. To remove the brake piston from the caliper, press the brake pedal several times with the brake pads removed. Once brake fluid appears from under the piston, remove it from the caliper body. Brake caliper repair procedure: Remove any traces of dirt and oxidation from the piston and cylinder, then polish the surfaces with a special paste; Replace all caliper seals and seals with new ones from the repair kit; Lubricate the inside of the caliper with brake fluid and press the brake piston into the cylinder. If the caliper does not move properly in its guides, these guides need to be repaired. Caliper guide repair procedure: Disconnect the caliper from the guides by loosening the retaining nuts; Remove the guide pins from the steering knuckle and inspect their condition; Remove traces of old grease and dirt from the guides and their cylinders; Lubricate the guides with a special grease and install them into the steering knuckle cylinders; Replace the guide dust boots and secure the caliper in place.
