Best known as a composer of songs, he wrote in the French classical tradition of the mélodie. He was the youngest of 12 children and born in Caracas. They moved to Paris when he was 3 years old. France would "determine and define Hahn's musical identity in later life". His teachers included Jules Massenet, Charles Gounod, Camille Saint-Saëns and Émile Decombes. Alfred Cortot and Maurice Ravel were fellow students.
