ECHO STONE & THE MUGDOCK CASTLE MYSTERY
There is something in Mugdock Country Park that is not on any map. It's close to the castle, and can be seen in Lidar images. It looks like a path leading to a hexagonal feature. But what is it? I initially thought it was merely a path leading from Mugdock Castle grounds to a pond. Then I thought, no... why would you build a pond right beside a loch? So, I thought it must have been a stone tower, perhaps a Victorian folly similar to one that used to sit not far away. Except that other tower is shown on maps, and this feature isn't. The only possible explanation for it not appearing on any Ordnance Survey maps is that it must be older than the first Ordnance Survey maps of the mid-19th century. Mugdock Loch was once much bigger than it is now. Our mystery feature sits on land that used to be part of the loch. Perhaps it is a man-made causeway built over water or marshy land, leading to a ... ... what? What on earth is it? Was this just a stone tower folly, or was it much older? Did it once form part of the castle's defences? Or was it even older? Might this be the only clue that thousands of years ago there was a dwelling built in the waters of Mugdock Loch. A crannog? What do you think it is?
