Last Secrets Of The Uffington White Horse

As so often with old monuments, more knowledge emerges from old graves. The Uffington White Horse in southern Oxfordshire has been carved into the hill some 3000 years ago and then been maintained ever since. Every 20 years at the latest, it has to be scoured and re-chalked, which the people in the local villages have been doing continuously for more than 120 generations. The knowledge about who created it and why has been long lost in the mists of time. Until today. With recent archaeologic finds and an imminent publication by Cotswold Archaeology and Thames Water we may be getting close to understanding the 'Who' and 'Why' question. Update September-2024: The book has been published by now: "In the Shadow of Segsbury" by Paolo Guarino and Alistair J. Barclay, Cotswold archeology Monograph 16. It is a very thorough and professional archeological piece of work, as you might have expected, but the conclusions for our white horse here are not immediately obvious, perhaps also to be expected.
