I’m visiting Yangzhou, China and it’s very different from Beijing. Let’s explore the lakes, gardens, tea houses and other hidden gems of this small town. I finally made myself to eat chicken feet, famous snack that Chinese people love, cause it’s sold in every store. Yangzhou is one of China’s oldest and most elegant cities, located in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. With a history of more than 2,500 years, it became incredibly wealthy thanks to its strategic position where the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal meets the Yangtze River. For centuries, Yangzhou was a major center of trade, especially for salt, silk, and rice, attracting merchants, poets, scholars, and even foreign traders. Today, Yangzhou is known for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful classical gardens, canals, and slower pace of life compared to nearby megacities like Shanghai or Nanjing. The city’s most famous attraction is Slender West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring willow-lined paths, elegant bridges, traditional pavilions, and scenic lake views. Other highlights include Geyuan Garden, famous for its bamboo and rock formations representing the four seasons, and He Garden, considered one of China’s finest Qing Dynasty gardens. Yangzhou is also the birthplace of Huaiyang cuisine, one of China’s four great culinary traditions. The city is famous for Yangzhou fried rice, delicate tofu dishes, soup dumplings, and its unique morning tea culture, where locals spend hours enjoying dim sum and tea with friends and family. Unlike many modern Chinese cities filled with skyscrapers, Yangzhou has preserved much of its historical character. Walking through places like Dongguan Street, you’ll find traditional architecture, local snack stalls, tea houses, and artisan shops that give visitors a glimpse into old China. Overall, Yangzhou is a city that blends rich history, classical Chinese beauty, and relaxed local life, making it one of China’s most charming destinations for travelers looking beyond the country’s biggest cities.
