Do you know why you go to church? What does that "service to God" during the service consist of? And what are the true centers of Christian life—the Liturgy and Communion? Our subscribers are likely sufficiently advanced in Orthodoxy (i.e., church-going) to have precise answers to these questions. A church isn't meant to be a place to walk in, toss a coin, light a candle, make a wish, and ask God for help. Let's assume you know this well. But imagine how those who don't know or have never really thought about it might feel at an Orthodox Liturgy—what, exactly, is going on here? Why all this? Their minds might literally explode with bewilderment. The chanted readings in a semi-understandable language, the mysterious manipulations in the altar, the outgoing prayers to the congregation, the censing, the sign of the cross, and the prostrations. And then comes the cup of wine and bread, which for some reason is called "the Blood and Body of Christ." For a casual churchgoer or a nominal Orthodox Christian who, as often happens, "just came to light a candle and commune with God," all this may seem like a disjointed collection of rituals. Meanwhile, right now, the main reason the Church and all its many churches exist is taking place. The very thing without which they would be nothing but a pile of stones.
