An Eyewitness Account of the Battle of Gettysburg: Daniel Skelly's Story

At just 18 years old, Daniel Skelly witnessed the carnage of the Civil War firsthand when the battle erupted in his hometown of Gettysburg. Years later, with the help of his son, Daniel printed his recollections in a small booklet that was acknowledged as one of the most complete and insightful accounts by a civilian of Gettysburg. In this video, historian Tim Smith shares Daniel's invaluable memories of the Battle of Gettysburg. This video is made possible by the generous support of Donald Holman. --- Visit us in-person at Gettysburg Beyond the Battle Museum, recently voted "Best New Museum" by USA TODAY readers and a 2026 Traveler's Choice Winner on TripAdvisor, at 625 Biglerville Road, just north of Gettysburg.
