American Bandstand 1970 -Rate A Record- If You Do Believe In Love / Gimme Dat Ding
Airdate: May 30, 1970 We have an actual future hit on the Rate-A-Record segment today! While the Tee Set, as Dick mentions, did have a big hit with “Ma Belle Amie” reaching #5 back in March, “If You Do Believe In Love” would not chart in the top 40. The novelty record “Gimme Dat Ding” (#44 today) will go all the way to #9 on July 18. (The judges got it right!) As you can see, both the dress code and age requirements have changed dramatically over the last couple of years. Our (older) judges today are Linn Sachman and Sidney Herback and our scorekeeper is Jennie Bern. The prizes have come a long way too (sorry good people of Ross Electronics) with Cool-Ray Polaroid Sunglasses and His or Hers Westclock Watches….Nice! Dancers: there a lot of new faces here in Season 13 and many of the dancers are from out of state competing today in the ’70 dance contest. The most recognizable regulars are (a very suave looking) Don Sanuskar & Pat Dickinson on the largest riser during the first song. Pat would be Don’s regular partner until he left the show in 1974. …..And in music news, in 2 weeks (June 13) The Beatles will hit #1 for the last time with the song “The Long and Winding Road” and in 35 days (July 4) Casey Kasem will launch the ‘American Top 40’ countdown show on 7 stations across the country. “Gimme Dat Ding” will be #11, and the “Long and Winding Road” will be #8. The top 5 songs on the first show will be: No. 5, "Band of Gold," Freda Payne No. 4, "Ride Captain Ride," Blues Image No. 3, "Ball of Confusion," the Temptations No. 2, "The Love You Save," Jackson 5 No. 1, "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," Three Dog Night
