He has held prestigious positions such as the director of the National Dance Company and the Gyeonggi Provincial Dance Company, served as the president of the Korean Dance Association, and was the vice-president of the National Academy of Arts. Having started dancing from a young age, Master Cho has not only perfected the art of dance but has also immersed himself in singing and traditional music, creating a profound and powerful personal artistic identity. The “Cho Heung-dong Dance” is especially noted for its unique portrayal of dance's primal elements. [작품해설 Performance Descriptions] "진쇠춤(Jin-soe Dance)" ‘진쇠’는 한국의 전통 타악기인 꽹과리를 말하며 가장 소리가 잘 나는 쇠, 즉 ‘참쇠’라는 뜻을 가리킨다. ‘진쇠춤’은 쇠를 들고 절묘하게 가락을 쳐서 소리를 내 여러 신을 불러들이며 그 신들로 하여금 잡귀를 물러나게 하는 의미가 있다. 조선시대에 나라에 경사가 있을 때나 궁궐에서 향연이 베풀어질 때, 왕이 각 고을의 원님들을 불러 춤을 추게 하였던 것에서 유래되었다. 절제미 속에서 신명과 역동성을 느낄 수 있는 남성적 느낌이 잘 드러나는 춤이다. “Jin-soe” refers to the kkwaenggwari, a traditional Korean percussion instrument, and represents the finest gong, aptly termed the “genuine gong.” The “Jin-soe Dance” is a captivating performance where the dancer expertly strikes the gong, creating sounds that are believed to summon various deities and ward off evil spirits. [장소 The Place of Background Descriptions] 〈덕수궁 석조전 Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace〉 고종(광무황제)에 의해 황제국이 선포된 후 1910년 대한제국 황궁의 정전으로 완공된 석조전은 엄격한 비례와 좌우대칭이 돋보이는 신고전주의 양식의 건물이다. 1930년대 이후 훼손되었던 석조전을 역사적 의미를 되찾고자 2009년부터 복원공사를 진행하였고, 2014년 10월에 ‘석조전 대한제국역사관’을 현재와 같이 개관하였다. Seokjojeon Hall, completed in 1910, served as the central hall of the Korean Empire's Imperial Palace, following King Gojong's (Emperor Gwangmu) declaration of the empire. After suffering damage in the 1930s, the hall underwent restoration starting in 2009 to restore its historical importance. In October 2014, it reopened as the Seokjojeon Hall of the Korean Empire History Museum. 〈덕수궁 중화전 Junggwanjeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace〉 1985년 1월 보물로 지정된 덕수궁 중화전은 덕수궁의 정전(正殿)으로, 임금이 신하들로부터 하례(賀禮)를 받거나 국가 행사를 진행하던 곳이다. 전각의 명칭인 '중화(中和)'는 '한쪽으로 치우치지 않음'이라는 뜻으로 유교 경전인 ｢중용(中庸)｣에서 유래하였다. Junggwanjeon Hall, recognized as a treasure since January 1985, is Deoksugung Palace's main hall. This was where the king received salutations from his officials and hosted state ceremonies. The hall's name, “Junggwan” (meaning “Central Harmony”), reflects the ideal of balance, inspired by the Confucian classic “Doctrine of the Mean.”
