Why does Paul compare Christians to athletes? What did the words “you were bought at a price” and “your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit” mean to the Corinthians? Why did Corinth become the recipient of some of the apostle’s best-known letters? These questions cannot be fully answered without first becoming acquainted with the city itself. Corinth was once the capital of the Roman province of Achaia. The apostle Paul lived there for a year and a half and founded a Christian community, with which he continued to correspond after his departure. Two of the letters he sent to Corinth became part of the New Testament canon and are known to us as First and Second Corinthians. Moreover, in addition to the letters themselves, more than thirty quotations from and references to First Corinthians dating from the late second and early third centuries have survived, making it the most frequently quoted of Paul’s epistles. The instructive message of these texts is timeless and remains understandable even two thousand years later. Nevertheless, learning about the circumstances and cultural-historical context in which they were written allows us to grasp even more deeply the principles Paul laid down in them. In this episode, we will follow in the footsteps of the apostle Paul and explore ancient Corinth, its ports, the Isthmian Stadium, Acrocorinth, the Temple of Aphrodite, and the tribunal before which the apostle himself once stood. History, archaeology, and culture help us encounter the letters to the Corinthians as the earliest Christians would have heard them—and understand why many familiar passages may actually be addressing something quite different from what we assume.
