In Freiburg, Germany, a village is attracting attention, where residents refuse to use cars and live solely on solar energy. Reporter Lee Ji-eun has the details. [Reporter] Freiburg, Germany, is known as the City of the Sun. Here lies the village of Vaubon, which generates electricity using sunlight. The quiet streets, lush trees, and the rooftop solar panels of each building are a striking sight. This place is called a Passive House— Architect Claude Martin is here to introduce the Passive House. [Claude Martin, Passive House Architect] "These windows are insulated doors. They are triple-glazed. We use a special wood to create the windows of Passive Houses." The triple-glazed windows are filled with argon gas, which provides excellent insulation. [Clau Martin, Passive House Architect] "Here, you see a plain concrete wall. The outside is insulated. This 30cm-thick wall, filled with insulation, prevents heat from escaping. Fresh air flows in and out through this wall. When you're in the bathroom or cooking in the kitchen, the air inside is released." Passive houses utilize a perfect insulation system, allowing them to efficiently utilize solar-generated electricity. There's no need for separate heating or cooling. For insulation, they plant grass and trees on the roof, and they store rainwater for domestic use. Naturally, this reduces energy consumption. The village of Bobon, home to approximately 5,500 residents, earned its name "Bobon" after the French troops stationed there after World War II. In 1992, following the reunification of Germany and the withdrawal of French troops, the village was left derelict, and the eco-village was created as a way to redevelop the village. Residents directly participated in creating the "Bobong Forum" and persuaded government officials to create an eco-friendly, car-free city.
