Fertilizing currants after harvest is something almost everyone skips, and in vain. I, Grandpa Alexey, have learned a simple thing over sixty years of gardening: currants begin to set buds for next year in July, right after you pick the last berries. The bush at this time is hungry and empty, having fed the berries all summer and given up potassium and phosphorus. That's the secret behind the yellow, prematurely falling leaves. In this video, I explain in simple terms how to fertilize currants in July, what doses of ash, superphosphate, and potassium sulfate to use per bucket of water, and why nitrogen and manure are harmful to the bush now. We'll cover currant care after fruiting in its entirety: how to water properly and deeply to ensure water reaches the roots, how to prune old branches and rejuvenate the bush, and what to do with black, red, and white currants individually.
