This is where marketing ends and the real physics of metal survival begins. Today, we'll examine HTHS from three angles. 1. Extreme Load Points: "Where in the engine are the harshest conditions?" o Plain Bearings (Liners): "Crankshaft and camshaft liners. Here, metal-to-metal contact is virtually nonexistent if the oil wedge is intact. But the clearance there is micron-sized." o Piston Group: "Piston rings at top dead center, where the piston stops and begins its downward movement. The pressure there is enormous." o Valve Train (Timing): "The valve cam-to-tappet contact. Here, the oil film experiences pinpoint pressures of hundreds of kilograms." 2. Thickness vs. Strength: "Why doesn't a 'thick' oil (like 5W-50) always provide better protection? Because in these areas, the film is incredibly thin. It's not the thickness that matters, but the ability of the film to maintain its integrity under load. This is HTHS. Chapter 2: Physics. How does it work? 1. Test conditions: "How is HTHS measured? The oil is heated to 150°C (this is the normal operating temperature of the oil in the piston ring area). And it is forced to flow between two plates at an extremely high rate (shear rate). 2. Shear rate: "What does this mean? Imagine running your finger through honey—it's viscous. Now imagine this honey flowing between two rotating shafts. It's no longer as thick. Liquids under shear 'thin out.'" 3. Viscosity is not a constant: "The physics of HTHS tells us that the viscosity listed on the canister (e.g., SAE 40) is the static viscosity at 100°C without shear. HTHS indicates what viscosity will actually exist in the friction unit under load." Chemistry. What's inside? 1. Base Oils: "The role of the base oil (PAO, Esters, Hydrocracking). A high-quality base oil itself has better viscosity-temperature characteristics." 2. Polymer thickeners (VM - Viscosity Modifiers): "This is the secret weapon. Polymers are long, branched molecules. In cold oil, they are coiled into balls (oil is liquid). When heated, they straighten out and 'entangle', thickening the oil." 3. Shear Behavior: "What happens to polymers at HTHS? Under extreme load, they 'straighten out' with the oil flow (like grass in a river)—this is a temporary loss of viscosity. This is good, as it saves energy. But if the polymer is of poor quality, it can simply break apart (permanent degradation). A high-quality oil must use stable polymers that quickly 'reassemble' back together." 4. PAO and Esters: "They have a very high natural HTHS and are less dependent on thickeners, making the oil film more stable." 3. How to choose: "The most reliable way is to consult your vehicle's owner's manual. It lists the required ACEA or API approvals, which indicate the desired HTHS."
