At lower temperatures, sludge often forms, while at higher temperatures (above 300°C in the area of ​​the upper compression ring), the resins turn into carbon deposits (coke). • Catalysis: Metals (especially copper and iron) act as catalysts, accelerating oxidation processes on their surfaces. 2. The Role of Motor Oil in Varnish Formation Oil can either prevent varnish formation or be its primary cause. How oil contributes to varnish formation: • Excessive mileage (additive degradation): Any oil contains detergent-dispersant additives (sulfonates, phenates, or calcium/magnesium salicylates) and antioxidants (e.g., ZDDP). Over time, these additives wear out (TBN decreases, TAN increases). Once the additive package is depleted, the oil loses its ability to keep oxidation products suspended, and they precipitate on the metal. • Base oil polymerization tendency: Mineral oils (Group I) and hydrocracking (Group III) are more prone to thermal degradation under high loads than fully synthetic base oils based on PAO (Polyalphaolefins) or GTL. • Low-quality polymer thickeners: Cheap multi-viscosity oils (e.g., 5W-40, 10W-40) use a high percentage of so-called viscosity modifier (thickener).
