#consuegra #toledo #lamancha If you have to choose one place to go to see windmills in Castilla-La Mancha, that place should always be Consuegra, where you can see and photograph the windmills with Consuegra Castle in the background. Consuegra looks like something out of Don Quixote, as if Cervantes had insisted on capturing its windmill-filled landscape in his novels. This town, located 62 km from Toledo, is the epitome of the La Mancha landscape and one of the most popular excursions. To get to Consuegra, I recommend driving or signing up for a day trip. There are not very good public transport connections from Toledo. To park, you can choose to park in the town and walk up to the windmills, or park your car at the foot of the castle. A symbol of Consuegra and La Mancha, the windmills crown Calderico Hill, creating an absolutely unique landscape. Famous thanks to Don Quixote, they are some of the best-preserved castles in Castilla-La Mancha, along with those of Campo de Criptana. In person, they never disappoint, even if you've seen them hundreds of times in pictures. Over eight hundred years old, Consuegra Castle, also known as Castillo de la Muela, is a fortress of great uniqueness and appeal, not only because of its location but also because of its history and architecture linked to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The structure of this castle is unusual. It basically consists of a square central body with a large cylindrical tower on each side. The castle is surrounded by a barrier, the only remains of which are on the side facing the parade ground. The origins of this castle date back to a Muslim fortress from the Caliphate period in the 10th century. Built on the La Mancha plain, the town of Consuegra is a clear example of a Castilian-Toledan municipality. We found typical La Mancha buildings located in the old town, which are definitely worth getting lost in to admire their architecture and main square. Visiting Consuegra doesn't require much preparation. Everything important can be seen in half a day, so you can combine the excursion with a visit to Campo de Criptana or El Toboso, the home of Dulcinea in the film Don Quixote.
