I Explored a National Park That’s 95% Underwater

Biscayne National Park is 95% underwater, and this Miami snorkeling adventure takes us to coral reefs, mangrove caves, huge schools of fish, a sunken barge, and Boca Chita Lighthouse. We begin at Miami Everglades RV Resort before driving through Homestead and the Redlands to one of South Florida’s most unusual national parks. After exploring the waterfront trail and making a quick stop at Homestead Bayfront Park, it is finally time to board the boat and head across Biscayne Bay. Our first snorkeling location reveals remarkably clear water, coral formations, barracuda, possible spiny lobster hiding places, and more fish than I have ever seen together. Then we move to a completely different underwater environment, where mangrove roots, thick vegetation, a mysterious barge wreck, and huge swirling schools of fish create an almost otherworldly landscape. This is near historic Boca Chita Lighthouse with the distant Miami skyline barely visible across the bay. It is hard to believe this magical underwater world exists less than an hour from home. Afterward, we return to the RV resort for a morning run, another smash burger experiment, and a quick demonstration of how I mount the Insta360 X5 before heading toward our next South Florida adventure: Everglades National Park.
