Wat Khuha Sawan Worawihan, also known as Wat Khuha Sawan, stands as a serene and historically rich Buddhist temple on the Thonburi side of Bangkok in Phasi Charoen District. This third-class royal temple of the worawihan type belongs to the Mahā Nikāya sect and is nestled along Khlong Bang Luang, offering a peaceful retreat amid the city’s bustle. Its origins trace back to the late Ayutthaya period, when it was originally known as Wat Sala Si Na, or the Four-Fronted Pavilion Temple, named for its distinctive chatumuk pavilion that served the local community. Though the temple’s exact founder remains unknown, it has endured through centuries as a sacred site.  The temple received its formal wisungkhamsima sacred boundary in 1777 during the Thonburi era. In the early Rattanakosin period, King Rama I graciously ordered a comprehensive restoration of the entire complex, including the ubosot ordination hall, preaching hall, and pavilion. He elevated its status to a royal temple and renamed it Wat Khuha Sawan, meaning “Celestial Cavern Temple,” evoking spiritual imagery of heavenly sanctity. During this renovation, the original large bronze principal Buddha image from the early Ayutthaya style was relocated to Wat Pho on Rattanakosin Island, where it continues to be revered. A new principal image, Phra Phuttha Thewanuramit Phichit Mara, called Luang Pho Phong, was created and enshrined in its place, becoming a focal point for devotees seeking blessings and making merit.  Architectural highlights that survive from the Ayutthaya era include intricately carved wooden gables on both the front and back of the ubosot, featuring tiered wings along the roofline that showcase the skilled craftsmanship of that period. Paired red sandstone sema boundary stones, typical of late Ayutthaya work, further testify to the temple’s antiquity, with later additions like decorative arches enhancing their setting. Subsequent royal visits, such as those by King Rama V and King Rama VII, underscore its enduring significance in Thai history. Today, the temple remains an active place of worship, blending ancient heritage with ongoing spiritual life and welcoming visitors who appreciate its tranquil atmosphere and cultural depth.
