The Artist House, also known as Baan Silapin, and the surrounding Khlong Bang Luang area represent a preserved slice of old Bangkok’s canal-side heritage in Thonburi on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River.  Khlong Bang Luang, historically part of an ancient waterway network that once formed a bend in the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya period, served as a vital route for trade, transportation, and daily life, connecting communities with wooden stilt houses, temples, and markets. During the Thonburi era and into the Rattanakosin period, the canal thrived with goldsmiths, merchants, and residents whose livelihoods revolved around the water. Over time, as Bangkok modernized with roads and urban development, many canals declined, residents moved away for city jobs, and traditional wooden homes fell into disrepair, leaving the area quiet and somewhat forgotten.  The Artist House itself is a roughly 200-year-old two-story teak wooden structure, originally a family home and grocery-gold shop belonging to the Raksamruat family, who were part of the local goldsmith tradition. In the early 2000s, artist Chumpon (or Chompon/Chumpol) Akkapantanon and a group of fellow artists, drawn to the historic architecture and waterside lifestyle, purchased the dilapidated property from the last family heir, who hoped it would be restored rather than demolished. They renovated it starting around 2007, preserving its U-shaped or L-shaped design with a porch, using original materials where possible, and opening it to the public around 2009-2010 as a cultural and creative hub. A standout feature is the ancient white chedi (stupa) from the Ayutthaya period, likely once part of a nearby temple like Wat Kamphaeng Bang Chak, which now stands as a serene centerpiece in the courtyard.  Today, the Artist House functions as an art gallery on the upper floor displaying rotating exhibitions of paintings, photography, sculptures, and traditional Khon masks, while the ground floor offers a café, souvenir shop with postcards and crafts, and hands-on workshops where visitors can paint masks or canvases, string bead bracelets, or engage in other creative activities. It embodies a commitment to keeping the space simple, ventilated, and not overly commercialized to honor the traditional community feel. The broader Khlong Bang Luang neighborhood has been revitalized by this initiative, attracting visitors via long-tail boat tours or land access, fostering small shops, eateries, art studios, and a peaceful atmosphere of wooden homes along narrow walkways where daily life, including occasional boat vendors, continues. This site offers a tranquil escape that highlights how art and community efforts can breathe new life into historical waterside heritage amid Bangkok’s rapid changes, encouraging preservation while allowing visitors to relax, create, and experience authentic local rhythms.
