Queen - Live in Essen (29th November 1980) - Wardour
QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN Tour: The Game | Leg 4: Europe Date: November 29th, 1980 Venue: Grugahalle City: Essen, West Germany Attendance: ca. 10,000 Audio Quality: A-/B+ Lineage: "Definitive Essen 1980" (Wardour-354; Released in 2019) Shared by J.B., doom43 and dance1102 The picture was taken by an Unknown Photographer. This show in Essen continues the German Tour of 1980 and is the beginning of the run of awesome concerts in late 1980. The atmosphere tonight is absolutely amazing and can easily hold up with the great audiences of the Netherlands in my personal opinion! After having had a day off, Freddie's voice has rested well and it would get only stronger as the tour progresses. On top of that, the band have decided to fill up the already long Instrumental Infero / Flash section by having the "Battle Theme" segment run into "The Hero" about a minute into the piece as they both use the same main riff. Tonight's version is unique as it's the only performance of the song in its original studio key. Freddie clearly cannot replicate his insanely powerful studio vocals and has to revert to lower phrasings with Roger helping him out in a few spots; from the next show onwards, the song would be played in a lower key altogether. Later on, Brian breaks a string during the first chorus of "Tie Your Mother Down", forcing Roger to come up with some unique drumming to give his guitarist some time to fix his guitar - both of these moments might not be planned or perfect but I think they both add to this being a very interesting and enjoyable concert in quite good quality.
