Our Most Terrifying Night of Van Life

113 MPH winds... and what we found afterward left us speechless. On our road trip from New York to Colorado to make it to Rye, Colorado in time for the biggest van life festival in the US, Peace Love & Vans, we found ourselves unexpectedly trapped in our van in Salina, Kansas. What started as a fun day exploring Kansas quickly turned into the most frightening night we've experienced in our lives. This leg of our journey begins in Kansas City, where we visit the beautiful Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and explore downtown before heading west to Topeka for a climb to the top of the Kansas State Capitol dome. After stocking up on groceries, showering at Planet Fitness, and getting ready to head to our overnight spot, everything changes. We become trapped in our van during a severe storm with record-breaking hurricane level wind gusts reaching 113 miles per hour. Surrounded by tornado and hail warnings, we spend 45 tense minutes hoping our van will stay upright and intact. Once the storm finally passes, our journey isn't over. It takes another two hours to find a safe place to spend the night, and along the way we witness the incredible power of the storm, including numerous downed tree branches and overturned semi-trucks. After recovering from the trauma of the storm, we then make our way to the incredible Monument Rocks, one of Kansas's most unique natural landmarks, and then finally arrive in Colorado!
