Probleme bei Seat, Skoda, Audi, VW: Wenn die Elektronik spinnt I Marktcheck SWR
Navigation, heating, parking assist: The VW Group's electronic system is causing problems for many car owners. And repair shops often can't help. --------- This video is an excerpt from the SWR consumer magazine MARKTCHECK from February 27, 2024. Navigation, telephone, radio, heating, air conditioning, parking assist – all functions depend on the infotainment system of his Seat Ibiza. But it often doesn't work. The trouble started in November 2022. Schornstein had only been leasing the Ibiza for three months at that point. “Even right outside my front door, the device didn’t recognize that I was home,” he reports. The screen became unresponsive. He filed a written complaint about the defect. The car was taken to the repair shop – but the problem couldn’t be fixed. SOFTWARE UPDATE WORSE THE PROBLEMS It wasn’t until six months later that a software update was installed. However, this didn’t resolve the problems; on the contrary, it made them worse. Schornstein says there were more and more navigation system failures. The radio was sometimes unusable, and the infotainment system stayed on even after the key was removed. MANY VW BRANDS AFFECTED BY ELECTRONIC PROBLEMS Theo Schornstein isn’t alone with his problem. The internet is full of complaints from frustrated car owners struggling with infotainment issues. And it’s not just Seat. The problems also exist with other brands in the VW Group: Skoda, Audi, and Volkswagen. They all use the same electronics system, the "Modular Infotainment Toolkit" (MIB). And it keeps failing: monitors suddenly freeze or don't even turn on – or they start flickering during operation. EXPERT: CARS ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMPUTERS Automotive scientist and industry expert Stefan Bratzel has an explanation for this. Car manufacturers can't keep up with software development. The high level of technical complexity, cost pressures, and short development times are increasingly leading to quality problems. With each new generation of vehicle, even more software is packed into the car. "If you don't have software development under control, you have a huge problem," says Bratzel. The range of infotainment features is growing, and it's becoming a key factor in purchasing decisions. "If you can't manage this with your own dedicated development departments, you need in-depth collaborations," Bratzel analyzes. , ... VW WANTS TO DEVELOP SOFTWARE IN-HOUSE However, the VW Group is finding it difficult to cooperate with partners from the IT sector. The company says it intends to handle software development internally. But despite billions in investment, development has not progressed as desired for years. The software problems are so glaring across all brands that VW CEO Herbert Diess had to resign in late summer 2022, partly because of this. DEFECT PARTIALLY SAFETY-RELEVANT This is by no means just about malfunctioning navigation systems or flickering screens. The bug is also apparently spreading in driver assistance systems across VW brands, thus becoming a genuine safety problem. Users are reporting failures of the emergency braking functions and lane keeping assist systems, as well as errors in traffic sign recognition. Why can't the VW Group get the problem under control? In response to inquiries, Seat and VW headquarters explained that they had taken a major step toward digitizing their vehicles, thereby undergoing a fundamental technological transformation. This process, they admitted, had not been entirely without its challenges. DO CUSTOMERS HAVE A RIGHT OF WITHDRAWAL? Seat driver Theo Schornstein has been negotiating with his Seat dealer for months about reversing his lease agreement. Whether new cars and leased vehicles can be returned – see the video!
