Norfolk and Western J Class No. 611 Summer of Steam 2026 | Film

Experience the billowing chuffs, the longing whistle, and the rumble of the rails from the Queen of Steam herself, Norfolk and Western J Class No. 611. Built in 1950 in the Roanoke East End Shops, N&W 611 demonstrates the most modern advancements in steam technology. She is highly regarded throughout the world as one of the most beautiful steam locomotives ever built. In original service, 611 would pull famous high speed passenger trains on the N&W system such as the Powhatan Arrow and the Cavalier. The 611 has been retired and brought back into service multiple times within its lifetime, most recently being fully restored to operation through the #FireUp611 campaign in 2015 by the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Today the locomotive still currently resides at the Virginia Museum of Transportation and operates in excursion service on host railroads. Here we get to experience the full power and glory of 611 on the Virginia Scenic Railway during the 2026 Summer of Steam Excursions out of Staunton and Louisa. This film was shot on opening weekend in Staunton, VA, and the locomotive is beautifully decorated in a special livery to celebrate the United States Semiquincentennial.
